“It Takes a Village” was the theme of this year’s annual cultural celebration that took place on August 3rd, 2013 and it took a village to pull out all the stops for this year’s event that was well received. Children were allowed to be present for the first time in over five years so the BPC made this event all about the kids!

Each child received 2 bags given to them by the fathers of the BPC. One, a back pack full of school supplies for the upcoming school year. The second, a gift bag made up of an autographed book (The Stolen Ones, by Marcia Tate Arunga), pens, a journal and a handmade bear designed from materials donated from Tanzania Africa by one of the BPC sponsors. Each bear was stuffed and sewn by men from the BPC and the Bears from Behind Bars program. The children also enjoyed a hilarious “Rocky and Re-run” puppet show. There was a live band, wonderful food, great poetry and guest speakers that made the event all the more entertaining. The smiles and the laughter from the children, mothers, and guests made it a successful event and we were grateful for the opportunity to have been able to perform and support the families who were in attendance.

Our celebration would not have been possible if it were not for the support from the community so we would like to give a special thanks to the families, sponsors, volunteers, Social Justice Fund and the Bears from Behind Bars program that came out to support the Black Prisoners’ Caucus and made this event possible.

 

NOTE: The Bears from Behind Bars program was created and is run by prisoners to support homeless and foster care children by supplying soft handmade teddy bears to be cuddly companions.
